Is this generation out of touch with racial struggles?
The pictures were graphic and upsetting. Two young men beaten and battered for no reason other then the color of their skin? They were upset and confused, scared and disillusioned and rightfully so. This didn’t happen in the south or in another country, it happened in center city Philadelphia. Even acknowledging their pain I was a little perplexed by the comments of one of the mother’s of the young men. “I cried all night because now he has to accept and realize the anger and hatred that exists in this society.”
Hmmm, I am far from a seperatist and not the person who is most likely to lead the airwaves in anti- any race statements but even I know that racism still exists in this country. All we have to do is look at the current presidential campaign. Does anyone really think this race would be close if not for the racial differences betweem Senator McCain and Senator Obama? Jasper Texas, Jena Louisiana, etc the examples are plentiful. I feel the pain of the mother who has to sit up at night with her child trying to make sense of a cruel and harsh world but at 22 years old isn’t it a little late?
I agree with the desire to live in a color blind society, to have young people feel that they will be judged based on their talents and not their race but simply put we are not there yet as a society. Taking that into consideration, are we doing a disservice to our youth if we do not educate them about the history of this country? Shouldn’t we prepare them, not to hate but, to be aware that there are people in society who will oppose them, hate them and yes want to beat them because of what they are and not who they are? Has this generation lost touch with the racial struggles of our society and do we have a responsibility to inform them?

Even though I am tired of hearing that every time black and white people are in some kind of dispute that it has to be a racial matter, I still understand that racism is still prevalent throughout the world.
Children should be made aware and taught that no race is better than another but that knowledge - through education and experience - will give them the means to intelligently handle most, if not all controversies presented to them in a normal or in an adverse matter.
People need to understand that the world is not what they would like it to be, but that it is what it is and that the ways of the world has to be dealt with in REALITY!
Also Bill, E. Stevn Collin (sp.?) handled the situation on the airplane most intelligently. He understood that he was in the air and any disturbance on an airplane, that’s in the air!, could possibly cause it to have stability problems. So, not only did he do the right thing, he did the most sensible thing.
Anybody…who would fight on an airplane, needs to seek out anger and impulsivity management. YOU GOT TO THINK!
I will be brief. I am always wondering whether today’s ‘popular culture’ generation of youths actually understands the Black protest struggles against racism and segregation which have opened up many doors for them today. One even often wonders if they actually have internalized the t-shirt images of heroric figures such as Malcolm X, Che Guevara, ‘Black Moses’ (Harriet Tubman),and other Black Power personalities, suddenly turned hip-hop musical lyric/songs, sang by some urban rhymester and psuedo gangster poets.
In addition, how can our youth be connected to the antecedents of the past when we ‘old heads,’ which includes myself, have not developede that intragenerational dialog as a link with them about issues of life today. I must do a better job in coaching little league football, baseball, and basketball. Unfortunately, I can’t approach them on the corner and start lecturing to them about Garvey, Anna Julia Cooper,Ida B.Wells Barnette, etc., I must strategicly approach them in their safty zone.
FuAccording to Christopher Lasch, who offers us another viewpoint concerning the cause for the disconnection of our youth,in his national bestseller in 1979, called “The Culture of Narcissism:American Life in An Age of Diminishing Expectations” he says ‘inner revolution of the seventies’[sixties]grew out of an awareness that the radicalism of the sixties had failed to address itself to the quality of personal life or to cultural questions, in the mistaken belief that questions of ‘personal growth,’ in his words, could wait ‘until after the revolution (page 15).’
The aforemention statement from Lasch speaks to a sad case of individuals involving themselves with just external issues of protest and revolution rather than critically engaging the internal self of transformation.
On Sunday, I was crossing the street in a very pedestrian busy place when 5 black boys walked right in front of me and started cat-calling to a girl across the street. I looked at all of these boys and noticed they were handsome, intelligent looking, and in the peak of health.Reminded me of when I was their age. They all burst out laughing at the girl and began making obscene petitions to her. I looked over to see her bow her head in an effort to not recognize the attention. Suddenly, one of the boys called her a skanky ass whore and the others joined in with names and vitriolic remarks as I stood there shocked and bewildered. It seems that the girl had no right to be modest and was rewarded for her silence and privacy by a group of hostile angry males.
When we talk about racism, behavior like this toward members of the same race is hard to understand. This was in full public view with no sense that a girl was being psychologically raped. More difficult is the broo-ha-ha that is made over paranoic racism that one of your guests spoke of this morning. I can’t imagine that there are many in the African American community who overlook what these kids did to this girl. I can not see how different this is from what has been going on in Congo toward their women . There is a serious flaw in the thinking of many when a girl can be dressed down like this and insulted and in fear of her life. Moreover, while many are worried primarily about white racism, that same group pays lip service to this sort of violence in “our community”. I could just imagine myself lying on the ground dead if I spoke up against these dickheads. Let us lift every voice and sing the song of life and hope that we can work on problems like this. If society is to ever work, it must correct behaviors like this.
Nean:
I am always fascinated on how you always, most of the time that is, skllfully twist the subject around and point it right back at the victims of whitesupremacy. Don’t get me wrong,I am one who do believe in self-criticisms, and also, believe in taking that long look at the person in that challenging mirror. However, there is something seriously wrong, I believe, with one who is either incapable or unwilling to critically recognize and voice disapproval at these pernicious and repugnant hate crimes without circumventing or abdicating their personal responsibility in not confronting racism which is ubiquitously omnipresent in American culture.
Now,I am not rationalizing the self-destructive behavioral tendencies that occured between those young Black adolescenes you were viewing. To the contrary, I am just trying to encourage you to become more mindful of our circumstances while you continue to hold us accountable.
I am a Behavioral health counselor and will be glad to develop a treatment plan for your recovery. How about criticizing racism, without holding Blacks responsible, for a hold entire month, okay?
Now I better understand why you supported Hillary Clinton. LOL!
.Hannibal:
He said “I am always fascinated on how you always, most of the time that is, skllfully twist the subject around and point it right back at the victims of whitesupremacy.
Hannibal? White supremecy or good old american racism?
Please council me!
I am not interested in either white supremecy or racism. What frightens me the most is the natural tendencies for all of us to hate each other.
The racism that you are talking about though is another sort of racism; that which is endemic to America. Yes there are a lot of people that hate you or will discriminate against you, or have less than admirable opinions about you and consider you…well you know.
These attitudes arise from this nation’s economic capitalist footprint. I have no problem telling you that I was baptized in a white can of paint. I saw racism from the clergy to the politicians. How could I help not being dumped in the same paint if you please? But, it does not mean that we continue to be racists. Besides, it is insane that anyone thinks they are better than anyone else.
I don’t care if you are a racist or if you want to separate from America. What I care about is that we all understand each other and work for each other’s best interest in one community. I know that you are no better than me and I am no better than you.
The important thing is that we recognize the issues that really count; the issues that undermine our brotherhood. I know you don’t want to hear it, but I feel I have to say it. Screwing around with girls like this is wrong no matter who does it. Why can’t you see that? Shooting each other dead is wrong. The more stuff like this is commonplace, the more estranged we become. I suspect a time will come when a lot of people will gang up on you and well be back to square one in this hate-filled America of ours.
If my name means anything to you, it derives from the word “Neanderthal.” Most of us are Neanderthals but we don’t see it in ourselves. I am glad that you recognize it in me so instantly. Not too many people have your powers of perception.
So tell me Hannibal…what do you think I see when I see in the newspapers every day what is happening on the streets of Philadelphia? What do you think frightens me the most? It is not the stuff you talk about that worries me.
I am bothered that all my Neanderthal compatriots, Neanderthals that they are, will wake up and see what Neanderthal you are and take aim and then what? We will all be back to that racist murdering society of yesterday. But, feel free to council me.
Neal:
Appreciating this interactive conversation concerning some challenges we have in our African-American community. Wow,you said a lot! Will try and address them with references for you to do followup research on my sources. You talked about being ‘baptized in a white can of paint.’ Isn’t that the circumstances with most of us living here in this white American culture(see ‘The Racial Contract’ by Dr.Charles Mills)? You said “But, it doesn’t mean that we continue to be racist.” Neal, this myth of reverse racism,is one of the biggest misconception among certain Blacks which intellectually cripples their inability to take a proactive response against this culture of American racism. Remember, Blacks, based on our weak political, economic, social, and cultural makeup in America do not have the cultural or social capital to be racist. However, we can definately practice hate and prejudice against the ruling white class(see Dr.Welsing’s ‘Cress Theory of Color Confrontation’).
Furthermore, you made reference to me or whoever trying to be better than somebody. I am unclear: by responding to racism and talking about our African history and culture, how as that trying to be better than anyone? Are you implying to not challenge the systematic misconceptions and miseducation of America on Blacks? Also,I do recognize certain Black seperatists who call WURD spewing their bombastic rhetoric about this psuedo and emotional seperatist dogma. However, please don’t mistake me for them! I believe that America is both the greatest and worst country in the world and will stay here and fight for our democratic rights as citizens who built this country on our enslaved labor. Another misconception: Everyone who supports African consciousnes is a reactionary seperatist. That is a major negro-centered contradiction!
You talked about being a ‘Neanderthal.’ If you studied Chiekh Anta Diop’s ‘Two Cradle Theory’ he clearly demonstrated that the Neanderthal’ man emerged out of the ‘wurm’ or what some called the ‘ice age’ of Europe. This species died off about 30,000 years BP.,you may want to look at the ‘Homo Sapien Sapien’ (thinking being), which emerged out of Africa to populate the entire world. It’s ancestors are the ‘Homo Erectus’ ‘Homo Habilis’ and then ‘Homo Sapien.’ Please look at any books dealing with Diop and the African origin of civilization.
Last,Behavior Modification is part of a behavioral tradition developed by Ivan Pavlov in the early part of the twentieth century. This therapy was adapted by John Watson in 1920 and eventually translated into behavior therapy by researchers and clinicians such as B.F. Skinner and Hans Eysenck in the 1950s. These approaches were later incorporated with cognitive behavioral therapy as developed by researchers such as Donald Meichenbaum and Aaron Beck.
Today, Behavior Modification therapy as we know it is defined as the use of rewards or punishments to reduce or eliminate problematic behavior, and can teach new responses to an individual in response to environmental stimuli. It is also defined as a, “ therapy that seeks to extinguish or inhibit abnormal or maladaptive behavior by reinforcing desired behavior and extinguishing undesired behavior(see Beck in ‘Cognative Behavioral Therapy’).” The goal of a program of behavior modification is to change and adjust behavior that is inappropriate or undesirable in some way. I have suggested, numerous times, to commissioner Sandra Dungee-Glenn, that this be infused into the public School curriculum framework as a prerequisites towards graduation.
And yes this theory of behavior modfication can work for you in changing your behavior towards Black folks from ‘undesired’ to ‘desired’ behavioral function. Keep the conversation coming because we need to learn how to address our polemic dissagreements through respectful debates based on careful quality resources rather than reactionary emotions. Last point, the CIA used behavior modification on certain Black power advocates in the 60s. However, I am not talking about that negative usage of it. One more point, yes, I have studied and written about African psychological approaches to changing our urban destructive behavior(see Prof.Reginald Jones in ‘Black Psychology’).
Nean: Sorry for the misspelling of your ancient name. You did say your name derived from the Neanderthral species. Again, the Neanderthral died off 30,000 years ago BC. Because Europe at that time was going through what is called a glacial period, meaning, not enough sunlight or harvest for the field and planting of vegetable food; remember, the environment was cold and climate unkind to the species which were dwellers of that cold and underdeveloped period (whites). Go study any good book on human evolution (not talking just about Charles Darwin).
Concerning racism and whitespremacy being the same(yes and no); must be brief, doing some personal sfuff. However, for now, go pick up the book by Dr. Neely Fuller “The United Independent Compensatory Code/System.” Fuller deconstructs with keen analytical insight the nine areas of activities which sustains white cultural hegemony: 1)Economics; 2)Education; 3) Entertainment; 4)Labor; 5) Law; 6)Politics; 7)Religion; 8)Sex; 9)War. Actually, I would include the African and African-American communities of the world! Dr. Fredrick Burton often talks about how this book assisted him in better understanding white America.
Fuller posits the notion that in those nine areas of activities around the world which white folks operate in they are in systemic and clandestine (and also overt) soladarity under the skillful policy of democratic government. You ever wonder who owns the money system on wall street? Who do you think owns the Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia? Why do you think they want to remove Robert Mugabe? Who do you think owned the land and diamonds under the leadership of Nelson Mandela?
Furthemore, racism and hate crimes, can be fought off through legeslation and laws, domestically speaking. However, whitesupremacy is a global system of power and influence for people classified as white permenantly! Go read Derek Bell’s ‘Voices at the Bottom of the Well(I could have that title a little wrong)’
Think of it like this: Whitesupremacy gave destructive birth to racism; which then gave birth to Capitalism; which then gave birth to classism; and then emerged Sexism and other pathological systems of control and conquest. Think of whitesupramacy as being to racism what HIV is to AIDS. We can treat and cure people with HIV. However, no cure for AIDS, yet!
So Nean, you did say that you would accept my therapy: 1) again, for a hold month, just criticize racist acts which you read about in media; and 2) go purchase and read, for the entire month, Dr. Fuller’s masterful book ‘The United Independent Compensatory Code/System.” I promise you after the month is over, and if you stick to my treament plan, you should be a changed man supporting African-American issues. I also promise you, you’ll come around and support Obama and leave Hillary! This treatment will be on the house!
Sorry for the typos folks: ‘Whole’ not ‘hold.’ Hey, I am a social scientist/behavioral health counselor for people with disabilities;I study behavior not english! LOL! So look for more typos in the upcoming future…

Capitalism and Democracy are the root cause of white supremacy but it does not necessarily have to be white. It could be any color or nationality. In the days of Greece, 3000 years ago, when the Parthenon was made, the Athenians used democracy to enslave other Greek states. Bettany Hughes: historian wrote about this democracy and came up with some sick conclusions about slavery and colonialism or imperialism. Bottom line, these magnificent Greek democrats screwed everybody they could. In her PBS and BBC presentation, Athens: the Truth about Democracy , Bettany Hughes appraises the meaning of Democracy and the ruthlessness in which they treated their neighbors, until of course, the Spartans destroyed Athens and wiped the sons of Zeus off the pages of History. “Greek democracy” she argued ” was not necessarily a good thing because it built an empire to enrich itself, allowed the slavery of others doing the dirty work and started self-serving wars.” Does this remind you of America? The riches they displayed in their cities were built on the backs of slaves and the wars they engineered to conquer others was for the sole purpose of enriching the democratic state. It was exactly the same model that the US followed, England followed after Elizabeth I, and Rome, as well as the Ottoman’s followed. In the name of Democracy, they screwed all sorts of people and here in America, democracy screwed you and your forefathers. This was adequately penned by Richard Wright and Fredrick Douglas. In my own opinion, Democracy is only a vehicle that allows capitalism to flourish and so long capitalism; then exploitation of man occurs. The white supremacy or the Athenian supremacy or even the roman supremacy that flourished was a product of that capitalism. Man is a fairly rotten Neanderthal if you are not up to his game. On the other hand, when citizens engage America in the conquest of other nations, they are just like our athenians, are they not?
regarding racism and white supremecy, I don’t really care to discuss them. I think that we have a window of opportunity since the civil rights act to make things better for ourselves by concentrating on our flaws; however disingenuous. I believe that we should present to the Americanas the best possible face we can in order to win their support rather than to leave them with a sense of insecurity and doubt. I fear that if that window closes, that doubt and insecurity will cause a Ruanda or a new terror to spread… not a good thing. We need to support eachother in a new world and defeat capitalism and democracy.
I am mindful of the Songe People and my relationship to them and you. We are brothers whether we like it or not but so long as we poke holes in each other’s fragile souls with charges of racism or white supremecy, even though they be true, it does us no good. Rather, we should try to address our relationship with each other and eliminate those flaws that worry us in Philadelphia. We need to work on the concrete rather than the world of feelings. Rape, murder, and exhibited and often reported problems need to be addressed.
We also need to admit that we are no different from the Neanderthals that once lived. Those kids going to Iraq are Neanderthals but they don’t know it. I am a neanderthal, Nean for short.
Hannibal, there is no cure for HIV or AIDS. HIV is how AIDS is spread.
Nean: Again, let me express the fact that I really do appreciate this interactive polemic dialog concerning the several salient issues in our community being tackled here today. Also, even though we’re remotely light years away from agreeing that Black folks can be racist under the rubric of whitesupremacy; I do still really learn greatly from these type dialectical conversations. This is why I reject the statement which says ‘talk is cheap.’ We need to always be critically hammering away on the issues which continue to be stumbling blocks in our communities from developing any progressive movement of developing Black institutions. The late great Rotan Lee always reminded us that ‘dialogue’ is the key towards any revolutionary pathway of freeing our minds from our internal doltishness as a people.
Furthermore, I am not familiar with Brittany Hughes, however, I can agree with her point: ” Bettany Hughes: historian wrote about this democracy and came up with some sick conclusions about slavery and colonialism or imperialism. Bottom line, these magnificent Greek democrats screwed everybody they could. In her PBS and BBC presentation, Athens: the Truth about Democracy , Bettany Hughes appraises the meaning of Democracy and the ruthlessness in which they treated their neighbors, until of course, the Spartans destroyed Athens and wiped the sons of Zeus off the pages of History.” Why would you call her recording of what happened in ancient Greece ’sick’? Remember, Socrates was put to death by the ancient Government of Athens only because he was questioning the authenticity of their democratic rule. He also was charged with sedition;teaching a strange philosophy(which he got from ancient Kemet).
You go on to posit: “We also need to admit that we are no different from the Neanderthals that once lived. Those kids going to Iraq are Neanderthals but they don’t know it. I am a neanderthal, Nean for short.” Nean, could it be that you are talking about internalized racism? Yes, Black radical psycholgists, Dr. Daudi Azibo, Kobi Kambon,Wade Nobles and Niam Akbar, including others of that school of deep thought, have all agreed that American racism has produced in many African American people, systemically speaking, a sense of cultural alienation. This feeling of identy crisis because of always seeing and experiencing Black failure, Black joblessness, Black on Black crimes, Black urbanization, Black suffering, etc. These type of destructive images of Black folks, produce in certain Black individuals a distaste for things African. They begin to disconnect themselves from their own cultural ethos, in favor of a more western cultural environment (meaning whites). I would encourage people to go read Dr. Bobby Wright’s ‘The Psychopathic Racist Personality.’ Wright talks about the pschosocial visteges of what he later called ‘mentacide’ which inhibits normal self-appreication and socially excoriates ones self identity.
African-centered psychologist,Dr. Wade Nobles, in “Seeking Sakhu: Foundational Writings For An African Psychology” in the chapter ‘Liberating the African Consiousness’says, “White Supremacy has to do with the need to force people of color, particular people with the most color, African folk, to serve the interest, obey the will, and satisfy the needs of white people (pages 264-265). Dr. Nobles argues, in order to rectify this psychosocial pathology which Black folks find themselves in they are going to have to abandon their false and manufactured admiration for western culture and return to the cultural belief systems which once were more congruent with African traditional people.
Don’t have much time but maybe I will address the rest later. However, want to thank Amadi for correcting me. I was thinking of Magic Johnson, but I know that he is still under treatment too. But looks healthy! Nean, give my proposed Behavior modification treatment some consideration. You could become a born again African! LOL!
Hannibal:
If you google Brittany, you could get a thousand hits on her site. You asked “Bettany Hughes: historian wrote about this democracy and came up with some sick conclusions about slavery and colonialism or imperialism.”
After reading a lot of her stuff, I suspect that she believes that democracy is the only way to maintain progress and that capitalism is the only system that advances the progress of man. I wrote her to clarify this perception but she refused to respond. Still, I think she thinks colonialism and capitalism are the only way to go. I suspect that she is MI5 and part of a secret organization that manages the course of Great Britain. I suspect that she was behind England’s marriage with us to divest Iraq and Afghanistan. These are my suspicions and I think that if they are true, they are sick.
As for Neanderthal, our history of war and the little thought that goes behind it in the average person proves that nobody has a clue of right and wrong, good and bad, nor morality. The soldiers in the field are as barbaric as any neanderthal and the only difference is that he has better weapons. Even African Americans are neanderthals because they would go to Iraq and do exactly the same thing that was done to them without giving it a second thought. Yes, we have running water and Einstein’s theory of relativity but the average person has not got a clue about what they are doing or why they are doing it. They all go along to get along from the top down to the bottom. When we dropped the atom bomb on Nagasaki and Hiroshima and bombed all the cities of Iraq and Germany, did that exposed the neanderthal in all of us or did it show us how intellegent we all are?
There are other models of behavior like communism. We here in the west and most of the world have our minds washed of the goodness of this system and we have been given the worst images about it that most people abhor it. We should really mark and catalog all the crimes of capitalism to pass on to our children even though that was done already in the past. The trial of Varo back in 76?AD by Marcus Cicero exposed the utter depravity of the capitalist system. Our own constitution marks its depravity. White supremecy, as you call it, is another example. Genocide another. There are so many. This never happened in Stalin’s Russia without reason as it does here.
There are many adherents to this system and so long as people want to have a better life and do anything to get it, we will have racism and war.

Hannibal:
A while back, I discovered that American society is an artificial society and could disappear overnight and, I suspect that it will pretty soon. In addition, most work in America is pure slavery hidden under pure drudgery. The pecking order of the past gave the black man a place in that society but in today’s world, not only do blacks not have a firm place, many are disenfranchised because capitalist government discriminates against them. Everyone needs a place and a job but not slavery. What is being offered today is nothing and that is pre-planned, maybe by white-surpremist design.Instead, 30 million immigrants have moved in to take over while millions of factory jobs have been taken over by the Chinese and Indians. In short, our capitalist system has looked elsewhere to satify it’s labor needs. It is much cheaper that way.
A lot of people who did not take advantage of the window of opportunity during the late 60’s and late 70’s were caught off guard and today their children pay the consequences through no fault of thier own. If we had a proper government and not the crap that we have today, we could have taken 50 billion and educated everyone and made a great society. Instead, we blew $10 trillion on all meaningless stuff. As it is, 30% of our society is wanting in so many areas that is it any wonder that there is so little murder, car jackings etc. Our prisons reflect the group most affected.
I understand your position about the plight of the black man and the causes for it; however, I think that the Honorable Minister Fahrakhan has pointed the way in the prisons and on the streets. Image is a thousand times more important to a community than is revealing the underpinnings of racism.
I’m guessing that the very same night those black kids were attacked, there were OTHER black males being attacked elesewhere in the city. The assailents of those black males were not white, but BLACK. Those blacks were not only BEATEN by their black attackers, but most likely stabbed or shot as well. A couple weren’t as LUCKY as the alleged hate-crime victims; they were not able to walk away from the attack ALIVE. This happens MOST weekends, especially in the summer. But black-on-black violence will once again take a backseat (400 killings a year) while we treat this once a blue moon racial attack like the start of World War 3…
Aaron: I strongly encourage you to revisit last week’s papers on that terrible and racist beating of those two Black young innocent boys. Attorney Coard is handling the case. That’s if we’re talking about the same issuse, they are racist whites! However, we agree when it comes to ‘Black on Black violence.’
I’m not saying it WASN’T a hate crime…the white guys were FISHTOWN…and Michael Coard is doing great things with historical slave site at 6th and Market, by the way. But what I’m saying is, if black-on-black violence got as much attention as this case (which DOESN’T include a homicide) is getting, there wouldn’t be 400 murders a year in this city.
